How to Choose a Construction Platform in Kenya: 7 Things to Compare

Introduction

Hiring a contractor, architect or supplier through an online platform can save weeks of phone calls, but platforms are not all built the same way. Some are classified-style listings where you do the vetting and the paying yourself. Others verify professionals, collect quotes in one place and hold payment until the work is signed off. The difference decides whether a bad hire costs you a conversation or a deposit.

This guide gives you seven checks that work on any provider, including ours. Use them to compare whichever options you are weighing, and read each platform's own published pages rather than relying on anyone's summary of them.

The seven checks

# Check What to look for What SuprosNetworxs does
1 Scope Does it cover the whole project, from professionals to materials, or one slice? Six groups on one platform: Consultants, Providers, Professionals, Manufacturers, Suppliers and Job Seekers, with construction as the main focus
2 Quote process Can you receive and compare several quotes for the same brief? A competitive RFQ system: one brief, multiple quotes side by side
3 Verification What is checked, by whom, and can you confirm it yourself? Background checks, cross-referencing and client testimonials; see what is and is not confirmed
4 Payment protection Is your money held until work is accepted, or paid straight to the provider? Milestone escrow: funds are released to the provider only after you sign a Certificate of Completion, for both full and installment payments
5 Fee transparency Are commissions and fees published before you commit? See our pricing and fees
6 Project support Is there help beyond the introduction: management, feasibility, cost guidance? End-to-End Project Management and Consultancy Services (feasibility and project-viability analysis)
7 Dispute handling What happens if the work or the payment is contested? Payment stays in escrow while a Certificate of Completion is outstanding, so a disputed job has not already been paid out

How to use the checks

Verification (check 3) deserves the most scrutiny. "Verified" can mean anything from a phone call to a check against a regulator's register. Ask what exactly was verified. For contractors, the relevant bodies are the National Construction Authority (NCA) for contractor registration, the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) for engineers and the Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS). A platform that can show you the registry number you can look up yourself is giving you something stronger than a badge. Our own approach, and what we have and have not independently confirmed, is set out on our verification page.

Payment protection (check 4) matters most to your money. Paying a deposit directly to someone you found in a listing leaves you with no recourse if the work stalls. Escrow changes that: the money sits with a neutral party and moves only when you confirm the work. Read why paying upfront on classifieds loses deposits and milestone escrow vs. direct upfront payment before you pay anyone.

Quotes (check 2) protect you from guessing. One quote tells you a price; three tell you the market. See how to get multiple construction quotes and what a construction quote should include.

What we do not offer

Being straightforward about gaps is part of choosing well. SuprosNetworxs does not currently have a self-serve house-plans library or an automated cost estimator. Our route to cost and feasibility guidance is through Consultancy Services; see house plans and cost estimation for what we can help with today. If a ready-made plan library is your top priority, weigh that against the other checks above when you decide.

Which platform is right for you?

It depends on what your project needs most. If your priority is a single place to request quotes, pay through escrow and get project-management support, those are the checks to hold every option against. Some people sensibly use more than one platform to compare quotes, which is no different in principle from comparing quotes from several contractors.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check before hiring a contractor through an online platform in Kenya?

Check what the platform verifies and how, whether your payment is held in escrow until you accept the work, whether fees are published, whether you can compare several quotes, and what happens in a dispute.

What does "verified" mean on a construction platform?

It varies. It can mean identity and background checks, reference checks, or a lookup against a regulator's register such as NCA, EBK or BORAQS. Ask the platform exactly what was checked, and look up registration numbers yourself where you can.

Is it safe to pay a contractor through a platform?

It is safer when payment is held in escrow and released only on your sign-off. SuprosNetworxs releases milestone and full payments to the provider only after you sign a Certificate of Completion.

Does SuprosNetworxs offer house plans?

Not currently. We do not have a self-serve plans library or automated cost estimator. Cost and feasibility guidance is available through our Consultancy Services.

Can I use more than one platform to compare quotes?

Yes. Comparing quotes across sources is sensible, as long as you apply the same checks to each provider and never pay a deposit outside a protected process.
